The last baker of Sololaki

Sololaki, Tbilisi · 2025

For sixty years, every loaf she baked carried more than flour and water. It carried a prayer.

The last baker of Sololaki

For sixty years, in the heart of Sololaki, she was the last baker in Tbilisi to make traditional Georgian bread in a wood-fired oven. Every loaf she baked carried more than flour and water — it carried a prayer. A prayer whispered with love, offered to each unknown person who would break that bread at their table.

In 2019, her oven fell silent. Not because of COVID, but after a tragic accident: a drunk man fell on her, breaking seven of her bones. By a miracle she survived and returned home — but her body no longer allows her to bake.

She walks now with great difficulty, yet her spirit is untouched. She remains one of our dearest babushkas — pure, radiant, filled with faith. She still prays to God every day, but what she misses most is offering those quiet blessings with each warm loaf she took from the fire.

We love her deeply, and we wish her many long and peaceful years.
